Chris Kraig - A Life Devoted to Design


Raised and educated in Chicago, Chris Kraig grew up within the great design culture cultivated by the legacy of: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van der Rohe, David Adler, Daniel Burnam and SOM. Kraig's point of view is Influenced by the Humanism of the renaissance, the Industrial romanticism of the 19th century, the graphic rationalism of the Bauhaus and the relaxed mid 20th century California school.

After studying architecture at the University of Illinois Chicago Kraig completed his formal education in fine art and interior architecture, Highlighted by a semester in Paris, from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Always an eager collector Kraig's attention turned to American mid 20th Century designs while still in school. After graduation he opened CHRIS KRAIG STUDIO a gallery specializing in 20th century furniture and contemporary art.

In 1994 Chris Kraig moved to Los Angeles to immerse himself in the California modernism of Richard Netrua, Charles and Ray Eames, and Craig Elwood. While living in a Craig Elwood house in Hollywood Kraig designed his first Commercial interior for the restaurant EAT WELL in West Hollywood.

In 1997 Kraig moved to New York and was hired as Creative Director of TROY where he designed and developed unique furniture and furnishings for the brand. While at TROY he Shopped international markets in Europe and Brazil annually introducing vintage and new furniture and furnishings to the New York market.

In 2003 Kraig was hired by ABC Carpet and Home to develop a floor devoted to modern and contemporary designs. The Floor was launched during ICFF of 2004 with an inaugural show of 30 Designers and artisans. The "888 Broadway" exhibit was curated and designed by Kraig.

In 2004 Chris Kraig Studio began focusing on interior design and design consultation. Kraig has designed many residential interiors in Manhattan, The Hamptons, Brooklyn, and Greenwich, CT.

The Studio has been Active in Retail merchandising, Model apartments, Residential Staging, Residential Lobby design/installation. Since 2005, Chris Kraig has worked closely with SUITE new york as consulting creative director where he is responsible for the selection of product and look of the Suite new york Brand.

Kraig work has been featured in: Elle Decor, New York Magazine, House and Garden, The New York Times, Harpers Bazzar and City Magazine.
